LEXINGTON, S.C. — The end of July brings a familiar fixture back to the Midlands calendar: a four-day charity golf tournament in Santee that has quietly moved South Carolina students into college classrooms for more than three decades.

The 36th annual Jim Clyburn’s Rudolph Canzater Memorial Classic runs July 30 through August 2 in Santee, according to event director Angela Clyburn. All proceeds go to need-based college scholarships for South Carolina high school graduates and college students.

## How a golf tournament became a scholarship pipeline

Named for Rudolph Canzater, the tournament has been held annually for over 30 years under Congressman Jim Clyburn’s leadership. Its purpose has never shifted — it exists to fund need-based scholarships, meaning the money flows to students who cannot otherwise afford to enroll, stay enrolled, or complete a degree at a South Carolina institution. Angela Clyburn has said the 2026 event pairs a full four-day golf competition with a set of surrounding programs for participants, alumni, and sponsors.

## Why Lexington should pay attention

Lexington School District One and the newer Lexington-Richland School District Five together send some of the largest South Carolina graduate cohorts into the state’s public and private colleges each year. The Canzater Classic’s scholarship pool draws from exactly that region — the beneficiary pipeline is need-based rather than merit-only, and the tournament’s home district covers much of the Midlands corridor.

Santee, the tournament venue, is about 65 miles east of Lexington and has hosted the classic for years. Its four-day format leaves room for both serious tournament players and casual foursomes.
