# Lexington County Deputies Exchange Gunfire With Armed Suspect

Two Lexington County deputies exchanged gunfire with an armed man early Friday morning after responding to a disturbing 911 call in a quiet West Columbia neighborhood. Sheriff Jay Koon said the man was shot and taken to a hospital, while both deputies escaped injury.

The call came in from a home in the 200 block of Shadowfield Drive shortly after 3 a.m. The caller hung up, then dialed back roughly 10 minutes later, sounding incoherent and making threatening statements, including a 

When two deputies arrived, they found a 46-year-old man standing behind an SUV, holding a shotgun. According to the sheriff’s account, the man fired at the deputies. Both deputies returned fire with their service weapons, striking the man multiple times and incapacitating him. Lexington County EMS transported him to a hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Koon said requesting an outside review of the shooting is standard procedure for the department, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has opened its own investigation into the incident, as it does with any officer-involved shooting. Investigators have not yet released additional details about the man’s condition or any charges that may follow once he is medically cleared.

The 200 block of Shadowfield Drive sits in a residential stretch of Lexington County near West Columbia, and neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots overnight before patrol cars and emergency lights filled the street. The sheriff’s office said the deputies involved have been placed on standard administrative leave while SLED completes its review, a routine step in officer-involved shooting cases across South Carolina.

No further public information session has been scheduled, but the sheriff’s office said it will provide updates as the SLED investigation progresses. Residents in the area were asked to avoid the block while investigators processed the scene through the early morning hours.
