Brewers Pennant Run Adds Twist to MLB Salary Cap Fight

LOS ANGELES — Milwaukee's four-game demolition of the two-time defending champion Dodgers settled the National League pennant. Whether it settles anything in baseball's looming labor showdown is a far more open question.

Owners want a hard salary cap in the next collective bargaining agreement, and the players union has long refused any version of one. The current deal runs out Dec. 1. The Brewers, who rank 19th of 30 clubs in payroll, now head to their first World Series in 44 years after dismantling the sport's biggest spender, a result some labor-law observers say undercuts the league's argument that money buys titles.

The league's opening offer, made in May, would cap 2027 payrolls at $245.3 million and require every club to spend at least $171.2 million, inside a proposed seven-year agreement. MLB says eight clubs would have to shed a combined $578 million under that ceiling, while 12 would have to add $617 million to reach the minimum. Owners also offered players a guaranteed 50% share of leaguewide revenue, the split used in the NFL, NBA and NHL.

The league frames the plan as a fix for lopsided spending: in 2025 the Dodgers carried a payroll more than seven times that of the Miami Marlins, and only one World Series winner since 2012, the 2015 Kansas City Royals, came from a bottom-15 market.

Others who follow the business side doubt one series moves the talks much, calling it a public relations boost for the union at best. They note attendance has risen four straight seasons without a cap. Many expect owners to lock players out once the deal expires, and the last cap push ended with the 1994 strike, a 232-day stoppage that wiped out that year's World Series.
