LEXINGTON, S.C. — A company hoping to sell hemp goods out of a house in Lexington will not get a town business license after Town Council sided with staff during an appeal hearing Monday at the municipal complex.
The application arrived Sept. 14. Jessica Lybrand, who heads the town planning and building department, said staff asked for an itemized list of the products to be stocked at the home along with proof of a state Agriculture Department hemp permit. Neither document came in. The company also had no home occupation permit, which Lexington requires on top of the license, so staff turned the application down.
After a short closed-door session, Councilman Todd Lyle moved to back the staff decision, pointing first to the missing state agriculture permit. The vote to keep the denial in place was unanimous.
The owner skipped the hearing but sent appeal paperwork for council to read, according to town attorney Tommy Morgan. The home sits on Laurel Drive, and the owner has said he will consult a lawyer about other options.
