LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — State agents have charged a Lexington County woman with forgery, saying she backed an insurance claim with a hospital bill that never existed.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged Shante Bethel, 43, on Monday with forgery involving $10,000 or more. Agents took her to the Lexington County Detention Center after the arrest.

Investigators said the bill was made to look like it came from MUSC Health Columbia and listed a total of $10,265. According to the arrest warrant, the fake bill went to a law firm on March 2 to back a claim, and the claim then went to the rental claims unit of Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

When agents pulled the woman’s real medical records from the hospital, they found no such bill, according to SLED.

The South Carolina Department of Insurance asked SLED to open the investigation, and that department will prosecute the case. A forgery charge is an accusation, and Bethel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
