LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Walkers, runners and cyclists who now have to cross a wide, busy intersection to get between two Lexington County trails could one day go over it instead, if a study now underway backs a new pedestrian bridge near the Lake Murray Dam.

The Central Midlands Council of Governments is running the feasibility study, which looks at a span over North Lake Drive, also known as SC 6, close to where it meets Lake Murray Boulevard. The goal is to tie the Johnny Jeffcoat Walkway to the Saluda Shoals Riverwalk without sending people across the traffic lanes. The area judged workable sits just south of that intersection, near a lake parking lot.

The agency sought consultants for the work under solicitation CMCOG RFP FY 2026-12, which describes the road as a multi-lane roadway and notes that local money is part of the funding.

The study started this spring and should wrap up this winter. It will cover technical reviews, public comment, early bridge designs and cost estimates. Nothing has been approved yet. Residents can weigh in through an online survey on the council of governments website.

Mark Smyers, who heads the Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission, said an earlier greenway study proposed a crossing at street level, which the community did not want.
