LEXINGTON, S.C. — Flag-waving families packed Main Street in downtown Lexington on Sunday afternoon as Lexington County staged its 24th annual Veterans Day parade, ten days ahead of the Nov. 11 national holiday.

The procession stepped off at 3 p.m. After forming up on Butler and Haygood streets, marchers headed down Main Street, then swung onto South Lake Drive to finish outside the county administration building at 212 S. Lake Drive. Veterans and active-duty service members marched alongside military groups, high school bands, civic clubs and community floats, and county workers handed out free patriotic posters before the start.

County Veterans Affairs director Ed Lundeen said the event tells veterans their service still matters to the people who live around them, no matter when or where they served.

Lexington has hosted the march every fall since the early 2000s and celebrated its 20th edition in 2022. The holiday started as Armistice Day after the World War I fighting stopped on Nov. 11, 1918. Congress gave it the Veterans Day name in 1954 so it would cover those who served in all wars.
