Two Lexington County deputies exchanged gunfire with an armed man early Friday morning after responding to a disturbing 911 call in a quiet West Columbia neighborhood. Sheriff Jay Koon said the man was shot and taken to a hospital, while both deputies escaped injury.

Both deputies returned fire with their service weapons, striking the man multiple times and incapacitating him. Lexington County EMS transported him to a hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Koon said requesting an outside review of the shooting is standard procedure for the department, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has opened its own investigation into the incident, as it does with any officer-involved shooting. Investigators have not yet released additional details about the man’s condition or any charges that may follow once he is medically cleared.
