LEXINGTON, S.C. — The Lexington County Blowfish have turned to one of their own to run the dugout. Zach Cowart, a River Bluff High School graduate who played three summers for the club, was introduced as the new head coach at the team’s monthly networking luncheon.

General manager Tony Baldwin made the hire public earlier in the week. Cowart will take charge when the Coastal Plain League season opens in summer 2027. Before then he will spend the 2027 college season as an assistant coach at Spartanburg Methodist, and he has already begun recruiting players for Lexington County.

As a middle infielder, Cowart helped the Blowfish win the league’s Pettit Cup in 2023 and was picked as a CPL All-Star twice. His college career took him to North Greenville and then Lander, where he earned his degree in May 2026 and was named most valuable player of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. He then signed a pro deal and hit .300 for the Atlantic League’s Gastonia Ghost Peppers.

He inherits a club that missed the playoffs for the first time in three years and closed its 2026 season with eight straight losses. This is his first job as a head coach.

Lexington County Baseball Stadium will also host a first-ever spring break high school invitational from March 28 to April 1, 2027, with River Bluff, Lexington, Brookland-Cayce and Airport among the field.
