SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry left the team open practice at Chase Center early on Sunday with a sprained right ankle, a scare that quieted the crowd just days before the regular season begins.
Curry, 38, was about 45 minutes into the session when he planted while trying to drive past De’Anthony Melton and his foot caught on the floor. He favored his right leg as he headed to the sideline and then walked back to the locker room.
The team said the injury was an ankle sprain and that his knee was not involved, easing worries after a right knee problem sidelined him for over two months a year ago. Coach Steve Kerr said he checked on Curry in the training room afterward and that Curry told him he was fine.
The Warriors did not give a severity grade or a recovery timeline. Golden State opens the season Wednesday night against the Lakers in Los Angeles, and Curry is entering his 18th season. The team had already been easing him in, limiting his time in scrimmages and the most intense parts of practice. He averaged 13 points in just under 18 minutes a game during the preseason and made 13 of 31 shots from three-point range.
Health is already a theme for Golden State. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are working back from leg injuries, Kristaps Porziņģis has been away from the team for three weeks with an illness, and backup center Charles Bassey is listed as day-to-day with tendinitis in his right knee. Brandin Podziemski also sat out the open session.
