BBB to Host Free Shredding Event, School Supply Drive

Published August 20, 2026 at 5:43 pm | By Amalia Reynoso, Staff Reporter

The Better Business Bureau of Greater Columbia & Charleston is inviting Lexington area consumers and businesses to a free shredding event and back-to-school supply drive on Tuesday, August 25. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the BBB Administrative Offices, located at 440 Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce.

This initiative offers community members a secure way to dispose of sensitive documents and other materials that could pose a risk to personal or financial information. Attendees are encouraged to bring items such as old bills, credit card records, personal paperwork, floppy disks, and CDs for secure destruction.

Chris Hadley, president and CEO of BBB Greater Columbia & Charleston, stated that properly destroying unneeded documents is a simple yet important step in identity theft protection. He also expressed enthusiasm for the added back-to-school drive, which allows community members to assist local students simultaneously.

In addition to shredding services, the BBB requests donations of new school supplies for local students. These donated supplies will be distributed to area schools to ensure students have the necessary tools for a successful academic year. Suggested donations include backpacks, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, highlighters, and loose-leaf paper, along with other new classroom supplies.

Shredding services will be provided by Shred360. Each vehicle can bring up to three copy-paper-size boxes or three kitchen-trash-size bags of materials for shredding. There is no requirement to remove binders, binder clips, paper clips, staples, or rubber bands. CDs and DVDs can also be shredded. Shred360 will also accept opened prescription medication bottles for disposal.

Hadley encouraged community members to attend, whether they have financial records to destroy or school supplies to donate. He noted that the event provides a convenient opportunity to protect personal identity and positively impact local students.
