News Summary

A severe accident on Interstate 26 East near mile marker 95 resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The crash involved three vehicles, including a Nissan Murano and a Chevrolet Equinox. Investigations by the South Carolina Highway Patrol are ongoing, as officers seek to understand the circumstances behind this tragic incident, which also severely impacted traffic flow in the area during rush hour.

Columbia, SC – A tragic crash on Interstate 26 East near mile marker 95 claimed one life and left two others injured on Friday morning around 7:10 a.m. The accident involved three vehicles: a 2017 Nissan Murano, a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, and a 2016 Dodge Ram.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Nissan and Chevrolet were stopped on the highway due to a prior collision when the Dodge rammed into the back of the Chevrolet. The force of the impact pushed the Chevrolet into the Nissan, resulting in severe consequences for all drivers involved.

Emergency crews promptly transported all three drivers to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. Unfortunately, the driver of the Chevrolet sustained fatal injuries and has not yet been publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

As investigations into the crash continue, they are being managed by Master Trooper William Bennett and his team at the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Authorities are working to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine any contributing factors.

Impact on Traffic and Nearby Incidents

The crash significantly affected traffic conditions on I-26 East, with reports of congestion as crews worked diligently to clear the wreckage. This incident occurred during a busy time on the highway, likely impacting morning commuters in the area.

Earlier the same day, another minor collision was reported on I-26 East near mile marker 105, but fortunately, no serious injuries were sustained in that incident. Crews from the Irmo Fire District responded to the scene, with assistance from Lexington County EMS.
