Lexington, SC – Terry G. Atwood, a 67-year-old nurse and cherished community member, passed away on July 8, 2025, after a two-year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Her journey ended at Lexington Medical Center, where she had spent her final moments surrounded by loved ones.

Terry was born in Sumter, SC, to Hamp and Frances Gaylord, who predeceased her. Renowned for her kindness, intelligence, and sense of humor, Terry touched the lives of many individuals throughout her community. She was known for her generosity and tenacity, qualities that were evident in both her personal and professional life.

Her nursing career began at Midland’s Technical College, where she met her late husband, Freddy Atwood. Freddy was transitioning from military service into a nursing career, and the couple completed their nursing education together, graduating in 1991. Following their graduation, they got married and embarked on a life dedicated to caring for others.

Throughout her career, Terry maintained her commitment to nursing even in retirement, taking on the role of caregiver for Freddy as he faced health challenges. Tragically, Freddy passed away just eleven months prior to Terry’s own death, leaving behind a legacy of love and care that both shared.

Terry’s family includes her sister, Deborah Harmon, and her brother, Chris Gaylord, who is married to Alicia. Additionally, she is survived by her stepsons, Brian and Shawn Atwood, along with daughter-in-law Sara, and her beloved granddaughter, Grace Atwood. She also cherished her relationships with her uncle and aunt, Frank and Leu Hinson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral services for Terry G. Atwood will take place on July 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Caughman Harman Funeral Home – Lexington Chapel. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation prior to the service, which will be held from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at the same location. Following the service, a burial will take place at Lexington Memorial Gardens, located at 1772-1782 W. Main Street in Lexington, SC.

Memorial Contributions

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the ASPCA. These organizations reflect Terry’s compassionate spirit and her dedication to helping others and animals in need.
