West Columbia, South Carolina – Cleanup Nears Completion at Maurice’s Piggie Park

Demolition crews are about three weeks from finishing the cleanup of Maurice’s Piggie Park’s burned headquarters in West Columbia. Co-owner Lloyd Bessinger reported that the restaurant chain is currently coordinating with an architect to finalize plans for a new building, which will replace the facility destroyed by a fire nearly a year ago.

Details of the Fire Incident

The fire occurred in October 2022, completely destroying the building that housed food preparation, processing facilities, barbecue pits, and offices. The headquarters was located near Charleston Highway, adjacent to the main West Columbia location. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Cleanup Efforts Underway

Cleanup efforts involve the removal of metal, concrete, and brick debris from the site. Initial demolition work was delayed due to hazardous asbestos found in the building, which was approximately 60 years old. Bessinger emphasized that the project required careful coordination with environmental regulators before starting the demolition process. Once the architect completes the building plans, the restaurant will seek contractor bids to begin new construction.

Timeline for Rebuilding

The new building is not expected to open before late 2026. In the meanwhile, Maurice’s Piggie Park is utilizing smokers set up in the parking lot, protected by a canopy from weather elements. To continue serving customers, a temporary kitchen located about a 20-minute drive away on Garners Ferry Road is being used to prepare side dishes.

Maintaining Operations

Despite the operational challenges presented by the fire, Maurice’s Piggie Park has managed to retain all its staff and provides transportation for employees commuting to the temporary kitchen. All eight locations of Maurice’s Piggie Park remain open and operate seven days a week, ensuring that loyal customers can still enjoy their favorite barbecue dishes during this transition phase.

Historical Background

Maurice’s Piggie Park first opened its doors in West Columbia in 1953 and has since established itself as a prominent area barbecue chain, currently operating seven locations across the Midlands. The destroyed headquarters served as the central kitchen for all smoked meats and house-made side dishes for the restaurants. The planned new building aims to enhance smoking capabilities for food preparation, ensuring that customers continue to receive high-quality barbecue as the restaurant moves forward.
