Born on September 10, 1946, in Columbia, Dr. Rawl was the son of the late Thomas Henry Rawl, Jr. and Helen Callison Rawl from Lexington, South Carolina. He attended Lexington High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1967. Dr. Rawl earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1971 from Duke University School of Medicine, where he also served as president of his senior class.

After completing his education, Dr. Rawl trained in general surgery and urology at Vanderbilt University Hospital, finishing his residency in 1977. He subsequently joined Columbia Urological Associates, where he worked as a partner for over 40 years until the practice’s merger with Lexington Urology. Dr. Rawl served as Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital and was a board member at South Carolina Physicians Care Charity, where he further demonstrated his commitment to patient care and community service.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rawl was involved in academia as a clinical assistant professor of urology at the University of South Carolina. He participated in several professional organizations, including the Fortuna Investment Club, Columbia Medical Journal Club, and various medical societies. His community engagement also included active membership at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lynn Tate Rawl; daughter Amy Rawl Epps, who is married to Elliott; and grandsons Henry James Cole, John Elliott Epps, Thomas Rawl Epps, and Sullivan Lawrence Epps. Dr. Rawl is also survived by his sister, Susan Rawl Daniel (married to Horace), and brothers Thomas Henry Rawl III (married to Patricia) and Richard Preston Rawl (married to Janice). He had several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by his daughter Susannah Rawl Cole Simpson, who was married to George.

Known for his compassionate care for patients, Dr. Rawl was described as a kind and honorable man and a role model for those in the medical field. His commitment to his patients and the community will be long remembered.

Funeral services will take place at 4:00 p.m. on September 2, 2025, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, followed by a reception at the home of Amy and Elliott Epps. The family has expressed gratitude for the care provided by Dr. Brad Word during Dr. Rawl’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, as well as to caregivers Bertha Abney and Rebecca McKnight.
