Even more impressive is the all-electric Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system for heating and cooling, which replaces the outdated gas boiler system. Additionally, new air handling units have been added to improve the ventilation throughout the complex.

With LED lighting, point-of-use electric water heaters, and secondary glazing, the building is no slouch when it comes to energy efficiency. In fact, around 3,238m² of insulated plasterboard and new roof insulation have contributed to a prestigious EPC asset A rating.

A Model for Future Developments

The renovation of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology isn’t just about aesthetics; it is hailed as a benchmark for low-carbon retrofitting in the education sector. The main contractor, G F Tomlinson, made it a priority to deliver social value throughout the project, engaging with the local community by hosting site tours, taking part in mock interviews, and participating in job fairs.

In an impressive display of community involvement, 63% of the workforce came from within 40 miles of the site, while 84% of total spending stayed within the local economy. During construction, more than 8,000 miles were traveled on foot or using low-emission vehicles.
