SCDNR offers free boat safety checks at Lake Murray

SCDNR Offers Free Boat Safety Checks at Lake Murray for Labor Day

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is providing complimentary boat inspections this Labor Day weekend, with opportunities for Lexington area boaters to ensure their vessels are compliant with safety regulations. These courtesy checks began Saturday, September 5, at various public boat landings across the state, including a key location on Lake Murray.

On Saturday, September 5, SCDNR officers were stationed at the Lake Murray Dam in Lexington County from 10 a.m. to noon. Another inspection opportunity for Lexingtonians is scheduled for Monday, September 7, at Dreher Island, also from 10 a.m. to noon. These inspections are designed to help boaters identify and correct any issues with required safety equipment and proper boat and motor registrations before they launch their boats onto the water. Boaters found not in compliance will not receive tickets but will be given a chance to address any deficiencies.

Lake Murray, a signature asset for Lexington and the surrounding Midlands region, is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities, especially during holiday weekends. The SCDNR’s initiative aims to enhance safety on the 50,000-acre reservoir and other waterways across South Carolina.

In addition to checking equipment and registration, SCDNR officers will be available at these locations to answer questions and provide valuable tips for staying safe on the water. Boaters are encouraged to take advantage of these resources to ensure a safe holiday weekend.

For those who observe boating violations, such as reckless operation or an intoxicated boat operator, the SCDNR maintains a toll-free, 24-hour hotline. Individuals can report incidents by calling 800-922-5431 or by dialing #DNR on their cell phones.
