NORMAN, Okla. — South Carolina heads west this weekend looking to stretch a two-game winning streak to three. The Gamecocks face Oklahoma at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in Norman, with the game on SEC Network.
It is just the second trip to Norman in program history and the third meeting overall, with the series split. South Carolina won big there two years ago, 35-9, a day when nine different Gamecocks recorded a sack and two defenders found the end zone. Oklahoma evened things up with a win in Columbia last season.
Shane Beamer and his team arrive on a roll after a rough start in league play. South Carolina opened 0-3 in SEC games, including a one-point overtime loss to Kentucky, 35-34, before beating Tennessee last week at Williams-Brice Stadium. Oklahoma is 4-3 and coming off a road win at Mississippi State.
Sooners coach Brent Venables called South Carolina as hot as any team in the conference this week. He pointed to an offense that leads the SEC in rushing at more than 220 yards a game and averages close to 500 total yards, and to a fourth-down unit that has converted 10 of 16 tries. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers, he said, is playing the best football of his career.
The other side of the ball worries Oklahoma just as much. Venables described the Gamecocks front seven, led by edge rusher Dylan Stewart under coordinator Clayton White, as among the best in college football, and the Sooners offensive line will try to keep that group away from its quarterback.
