Construction of Antique Apartments Approved in Columbia

News Summary

Columbia’s Design and Development Review Commission has approved the Antique Apartments, a six-story complex offering 200 residential units near the Congaree River. Developed by PMC Property Group, this project aims to enhance the riverfront neighborhood with retail spaces and a parking garage. Community support has been positive, marking a significant step in the area’s redevelopment.

Columbia has approved the construction of a new six-story apartment complex, known as the “Antique Apartments,” which will provide 200 residential units. This significant development is set to take place at the intersection of Blossom and Huger streets, conveniently located near the Congaree River.

The Design and Development Review Commission of the city gave its approval on July 17, 2025, following an earlier endorsement from the city’s Planning Commission on July 10, 2025. The project is part of a larger initiative aimed at enhancing the riverfront neighborhood, which is expected to create better connectivity between the city and the river.

PMC Property Group, a real estate development firm based in Philadelphia, is spearheading the project. During the commission meeting, detailed renderings outlining the design of the apartments were presented. PMC has agreed to incorporate several minor design modifications as suggested by the city, such as the addition of murals and distinct window frame details.

The proposed apartment complex will also include approximately 5,600 square feet dedicated to retail space and feature a parking garage with 263 spots. Despite its proximity to various student housing developments, PMC representatives confirmed that these apartments will not be designated for student use.

Local residents have voiced their support for the construction of the apartment complex, praising its design and potential benefits to the neighborhood. The Mill District Alliance, an organization representing nearby neighborhoods, submitted a letter of support for PMC and the project, indicating a positive community reception.

The planned Antique Apartments complex will be situated within a developing area that includes existing residential options, such as the University of South Carolina’s Park Place apartment-style dormitory, operational since 2016 and featuring 649 beds. Another nearby project, The Verve, is currently under construction and is set to open in fall 2026, adding 697 new student beds to the local housing market.

The intersection of Huger and Blossom streets serves as a key thoroughfare connecting downtown Columbia with the University of South Carolina, making this location particularly significant for urban development. The approval of the Antique Apartments marks another step forward in the ongoing transformation of this area, which is experiencing rapid growth and redevelopment.

As Columbia continues to evolve, the addition of the Antique Apartments signifies the city’s commitment to fostering diverse housing options while also enhancing the riverfront community. With the combination of residential and retail components, this project aims to contribute positively to the local economy and lifestyle, making it an important milestone in the city’s development journey.
