Columbia – The historic Tapp’s Building in downtown Columbia is set to welcome a new boutique department store, The Shoppes at Tapps, which is scheduled to open its doors in July 2025. The store will occupy the main level of the Tapp’s Building, located at 1644 Main St., at the bustling intersection of Main and Blanding streets.
The Shoppes at Tapps will feature approximately 11,000 square feet of curated retail space designed to offer a unique shopping experience. This new establishment aims to revitalize the area by providing a modern shopping venue while honoring the history of the iconic Tapp’s Building, which once housed Tapp’s Department Store for many decades until it closed its doors in 1995.
As part of its offerings, The Shoppes at Tapps will be anchored by the retail brand Icon, which will occupy around 3,000 square feet within the store. In addition to Icon, there is an available retail space of about 8,000 square feet for lease, priced at $4 per square foot per month. Retailers in The Shoppes at Tapps will share in a 10% sales contribution model to help cover staffing and operational expenses for the store.
The Shoppes at Tapps will operate seven days a week, with hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Shoppers will benefit from convenient parking options, including 40 resurfaced spots across the street and additional parking available at the nearby Cannon Garage.
In addition to the retail space, the basement level of the Tapp’s Building will be home to a modern fitness facility named 24-7 Gym. This gym will be equipped with state-of-the-art machines, designated group fitness areas, and independent HVAC systems tailored for activities like hot yoga and cycling. Memberships at 24-7 Gym will be competitively priced, starting at $25 per month, alongside an initial registration fee of $25.
The Tapp’s Building itself has a rich history and is celebrated for its Art Moderne architectural style. Completed in 1940, it served as a significant retail space in Columbia for generations. After the closure of Tapp’s Department Store, the building transitioned to serve as the Tapp’s Art Center until it moved to a new location in 2019. Following this relocation, the building underwent rehabilitation and now includes apartments on its upper floors.
The development of The Shoppes at Tapps is being spearheaded by LTC Hospitality, a well-known developer in Columbia’s Main Street District. LTC Hospitality has previously contributed to the area’s vibrant atmosphere through various successful ventures, including popular restaurants such as Smoked and Hanabi Hibachi & Sushi.
As Columbia continues to grow and evolve, the arrival of The Shoppes at Tapps marks an exciting new chapter for the historic Tapp’s Building, promising not only to enrich the shopping landscape in downtown but also to preserve the legacy of one of the city’s landmark buildings.
