Investigation Underway in Columbia Murder of Logan Federico

Police presence in a Columbia neighborhood

News Summary

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the murder of 22-year-old Logan Federico, who was shot in a rental home. A suspect has been taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including murder. Friends of Federico have established ‘Logan’s Team’ to honor her memory, as the community seeks justice and grapples with the violence of the incident.

Columbia – The Columbia Police Department is currently investigating the murder of 22-year-old Logan Federico, a visiting student who was shot at a rental home on the 2700 block of Cypress Street early Saturday morning. Federico was in Columbia visiting friends from Waxhaw, North Carolina, and returned to the rental property, predominantly used by University of South Carolina (USC) students, around 3 a.m. after a night out.

Federico’s friends discovered her body at approximately 11:14 a.m. and subsequently called 911. An autopsy conducted later revealed that she had died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, with authorities ruling her death a homicide.

The suspect in this tragic incident has been identified as 30-year-old Alexander Dickey, who had previous warrants and convictions, and was wanted by the Forest Acres Police Department at the time of the shooting. After allegedly shooting Federico, Dickey stole various items, including keys, credit cards, and firearms, from both the rental home and a neighboring residence.

Dickey then fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and embarked on what law enforcement officials characterized as a “shopping spree,” making unauthorized transactions with the stolen credit and debit cards across West Columbia, Lexington, and Saluda Counties. His flight from the law came to a halt when the vehicle he was driving broke down in Saluda County. In an attempt to escape, he contacted a towing service to take his stolen car to the residence of a female acquaintance in Gaston.

Police began tracking Dickey’s movements, and around 4 p.m. on Sunday, he was spotted exiting the woods in Lexington County. During this encounter, he reportedly stole yet another vehicle. Following a crash with this second stolen car, he broke into an unoccupied house in Gaston, where he allegedly set the property on fire. Law enforcement quickly surrounded the home, leading to Dickey’s extraction through a window before taking him into custody.

Dickey was treated for injuries suffered during the incident at a local hospital before being booked into the Lexington County Detention Center, where he has been denied bond. He now faces multiple charges, including murder, burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, grand larceny, financial transaction card theft, first-degree burglary, and second-degree arson.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook described Federico as a “helpless victim” who was not an intended target in this crime. Federico’s father, Stephen, painted a picture of his daughter as a bright young woman with ambitions of becoming a teacher, who worked tirelessly at two jobs to achieve her dreams. He expressed hope that although her life was tragically cut short, her spirit would survive and continue to watch over others.

The investigation into the murder of Logan Federico remains ongoing as authorities piece together the events leading up to her death. In memory of their friend, a group of Federico’s friends have established “Logan’s Team,” aiming to honor her legacy and keep her spirit alive within the community.

The tragic loss of Federico has deeply impacted those who knew her, and the surrounding community continues to grapple with the consequences of this senseless act of violence. The police department has encouraged anyone with additional information regarding the case to come forward, as they seek justice for the young woman whose bright future was abruptly taken away.
