A Life Well-Lived
Sassy, as she was fondly called, was born in Lexington, NC, on February 19, 1928. She grew up in the vibrant city of Columbia, where her artistic journey began. Influenced by her parents, Mary Norman “Happy” and William Dixon Robertson, Sassy developed an early love for both art and community service. Her educational journey took her through A.C. Moore Elementary, Hand Junior High, and Columbia High School. She later pursued her college education at Greensboro College before earning her degree at the University of South Carolina.
Love and Legacy
During her time at USC, Sassy became a devoted Gamecock fan and made lifelong friendships, including meeting her late husband, William Dewey “Billy” Shull. The couple tied the knot on April 29, 1950, beginning a beautiful journey together. They settled down on Spring Lake Road, where Sassy would spend over 70 years creating a home filled with love, laughter, and art.
A Passion for Art and Community
Sassy was a multi-talented artist, renowned for her beautiful portraits of both people and beloved pets. Her creative spirit didn’t stop with painting; she also ventured into writing, publishing a heartwarming novella for her friends and family after mastering the computer. A charter member of Trenholm Road Methodist Church since 1954, she dedicated over 20 years teaching Sunday School and designed numerous eye-catching banners for the church sanctuary, enriching the spiritual life of her community.
Active and Adventurous Spirit
Living life to the fullest, Sassy was an avid golfer who celebrated her 95th birthday with a nine-hole round. Throughout her golfing adventures, she achieved a remarkable four holes-in-one, which speaks volumes about her competitive spirit. Sassy was a true sports enthusiast, cheering passionately for her Gamecocks and the Atlanta Braves, forging connections with fans of all ages.
Family Values and Connections
Sassy was not only a mother and grandmother but also a guiding light for her family. She placed great emphasis on moral and spiritual values, reflecting that in her daily interactions. She kept in touch with her loved ones through her humorous and instructive Sunday emails, a cherished tradition her family holds dear. Sassy was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Rear Admiral William Dixon Robertson, Jr., yet she leaves behind a legacy of love.
She is survived by her three daughters, Hargrave and Rick McElroy, Sally and Michael Teden, and Sandy and Michael Roberts. Sassy also leaves behind a lively band of grandchildren and their spouses, along with an impressive 24 great-grandchildren who will carry her spirit forward.
