Columbia, SC – A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of 22-year-old Logan Federico, a college student from Waxhaw, North Carolina, who was fatally shot in Columbia on May 3, 2025. The incident occurred at a rental home on Cypress Street where Federico was visiting friends who are college students.

Logan Federico returned to the rental house shortly before 3 a.m. after a night out with friends. Tragically, she was found dead inside the home around 11:14 a.m., having succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest, which an autopsy later confirmed was a homicide. Alexander Dickey, the man charged with her murder, is accused of breaking into the rental property, stealing keys, a gun, and other personal items before entering the neighboring house where Federico was staying.

After the shooting, Dickey fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook described Dickey’s subsequent actions as a “crime spree.” He allegedly used stolen credit and debit cards in Lexington and Saluda Counties before his stolen vehicle broke down. Seeking refuge, Dickey called for a tow truck to a nearby home in Gaston where he knew a woman.

Authorities began tracking Dickey as he fled into nearby woods, leading to an extensive overnight search during severe weather conditions. He was seen leaving the woods and reportedly stole another vehicle, which he later crashed. After returning to the Gaston home, he forced entry into an unoccupied residence and barricaded himself inside. While law enforcement attempted to negotiate his surrender, the house caught fire. Dickey was ultimately extricated through a window and taken into custody. Following his arrest, he received treatment at a hospital before being booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.

Dickey has an extensive criminal history, including charges of murder, burglary, and grand larceny. His actions in relation to Federico’s death and the subsequent criminal activities have heightened concerns in the community regarding public safety.

Logan Federico was remembered by her family as a strong, fun-loving individual who aspired to be a teacher. Her father expressed profound grief over the loss of his daughter, emphasizing the impact her death has had on their lives.

The investigation into Federico’s death remains active and ongoing as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in their investigation.
