Lexington

A fatal collision on Sunset Boulevard claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman from Pelion on Tuesday, April 1. The incident occurred around noon in the 5100 block of Sunset Boulevard, in front of the Lexington Pavilion shopping center.

Margie Hayden Cook was identified as the deceased by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. The accident transpired as Cook was pulling out of the shopping center parking lot when another vehicle traveling westbound on Sunset Boulevard collided with her. The impact proved fatal, and Cook died at the scene from the injuries she sustained in the collision. At the time of the accident, she was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. As of now, it has not been confirmed whether that driver was wearing a seat belt during the incident.

The collision resulted in temporary lane closures on Sunset Boulevard, prompting first responders to work on the scene. To ease traffic during the closure, a detour was established using Corley Mill Road. All lanes of Sunset Boulevard were reopened shortly after the incident, around 1:05 PM.

The Lexington Police Department and the coroner’s office are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatal accident. As the investigation continues, additional details may be provided.

Current Statistics on South Carolina Road Fatalities

The tragic event contributes to a broader issue of road safety in South Carolina. As of April 1, 2025, there have been 158 reported deaths on roadways across the state this year. This figure adds to a concerning trend seen in recent years, with at least 948 fatalities recorded in crashes throughout the state in 2024.

Within Lexington County, at least seven deaths have been reported from traffic incidents during 2025. These statistics highlight the ongoing challenges of road safety in the region and the need for continued efforts to reduce the number of fatalities on South Carolina roads.

As authorities continue their investigation into the details of the accident, updates will be provided as more facts become available. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office, alongside the Lexington Police Department, is dedicated to uncovering the circumstances that lead to this tragic loss of life.
