Lake Murray, located near Lexington in South Carolina, is a sprawling man-made reservoir spanning over 50,000 acres of water with 650 miles of shoreline. History
Constructed in the late 1920s by the Lexington Water Power Company, Lake Murray was built primarily to generate hydroelectric power for the state. The project involved flooding the Saluda River valley, displacing communities and creating what was then the world’s largest earthen dam, stretching 1.5 miles long and rising 200 feet high. Completed in 1930, the dam used native red clay and bedrock, and the lake was named after chief engineer William S. Murray. It first produced electricity on December 1, 1930, and at the time, it was celebrated as the world’s largest power reservoir. Today, it continues to provide power while also serving as a vital water source and recreational area.
The creation of Lake Murray transformed the local landscape, submerging old towns, farms, and even a historic bombing range from World War II, remnants of which sometimes surface during low water levels. Over the decades, it has evolved from a purely utilitarian project into a beloved regional landmark, boosting tourism and local economies in Lexington and surrounding areas.
