Road Closures and Traffic Detours Announced in Lexington County, S.C.

Hey there, Lexington! If you’ve been out and about lately, you might want to brace yourself for some unexpected detours and lane shifts around town. The local police department has recently announced some important updates regarding road work that could affect your travel plans.

Lane Shift Alert on South Lake Drive

First up, put your hazard lights on! There’s a northbound lane shift happening on the 500 block of South Lake Drive, or SC-6, starting this Wednesday. This shift is due to some road work that’s taking place daily from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.. The hardworking crews are busy installing a driveway into the new Old Mill Trail parking lot, so expect some modifications in traffic flow in that area.

Detours Near Lexington Medical Center

But wait, there’s more! If you happen to travel near the Lexington Medical Center, you might want to add a few extra minutes to your commute. On Tuesday morning, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) reported that westbound traffic on US-378 had to be detoured due to emergency sewer line repairs at the intersection of West Hospital Drive and Sunset Boulevard.

Don’t worry if you’re an emergency vehicle; they still have safe access to the hospital. However, for everyone else, it’s a good idea to plan alternate routes and be prepared for some delays while workers do their thing.

Upcoming Repairs on Whippoorwill Drive

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for July 29! That’s when SCDOT is set to close Whippoorwill Drive at US-378 for some much-needed pavement repairs. This work will include drainage improvements and resurfacing. The project is expected to wrap up by the end of August, so if you travel that road often, keep an eye on traffic updates.

Pine Street Bridge Repairs Scheduled

And don’t forget the upcoming bridge repairs! Starting on November 4, 2024, Pine Street in South Congaree will be closed from East Steel Road to Edmund Highway. This closure is slated to last about a week for bridge repairs, during which time there will be a detour route for local traffic—though remember, it won’t apply at the bridge site itself. So, you might want to avoid that area if you can.

Utility Work on Sunset Boulevard

In more recent news, there was an emergency roadwork situation on Sunset Boulevard due to utility repairs involving a sewer line at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and West Hospital Drive. The westbound lanes were temporarily closed but, good news, as of around 9:55 p.m., repairs were completed and Sunset Boulevard has been reopened.

Final Thoughts

As always, while navigating through these work zones, drivers are encouraged to slow down and pay close attention to road signs and crews. Information about road closures and detours can change as more developments unfold, so stay tuned for further updates if you plan to take these routes soon.

Let’s make our commutes smoother by staying informed and being patient as our roads get the care they need! Safe travels, Lexington!
