Lexington Town Council Approves Sunset Boulevard Road Work

Construction work on Sunset Boulevard in Lexington, SC

News Summary

The Lexington Town Council has approved an extension of road work on Sunset Boulevard, aiming to enhance traffic flow near Interstate 20. This infrastructure project includes the realignment of Corley Mill Road and an additional roadway, supported by a budget of $2.9 million. Construction is projected to begin in early 2027, addressing increasing traffic demands and improving accessibility for residents and commuters.

Lexington – The Lexington Town Council approved an extension of road work on Sunset Boulevard during a vote on Monday, aiming to enhance traffic flow near Interstate 20. This extension will involve the realignment of Corley Mill Road, a key connector leading north from Sunset Boulevard toward River Bluff High School and various residential developments along the Saluda River.

The ongoing project, often referred to as the “Sunset Split,” intends to build an additional roadway that will facilitate interstate-bound traffic. The approved plan will extend the roadway by 750 feet along Corley Mill, modifying the existing three-lane section from the Corley Mill House to the entrance of the River Ridge subdivision.

The total budget for this infrastructure project stands at $2.9 million, with an increase of $243,211 attributed to the recent changes. Funding will be derived from hospitality taxes and Tax Increment Financing (TIF). To proceed with the realignment, an additional $36,700 in hospitality tax funds will be required to acquire six more parcels of land for right-of-way purposes.

Before construction can begin, environmental, pavement, and geotechnical assessments will need to be conducted. The new road layout will reroute traffic around the TD Bank building, reconnecting with Sunset Boulevard across from Honda of Columbia, in response to feedback from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The town’s mayor emphasized the importance of complying with SCDOT requirements throughout the planning process.

There are concerns related to billboards located along the affected section. Property owners could face implications if signage needs to be removed for the project. The town plans to inform all affected property owners through mailed notices and communication from a town representative about any modifications that might impact them.

Originally, the first design for the intersection was established in 2020, but it was revised this year following a reallocation of state funds initially designated for a controversial conference center and resort project at Lake Murray.

As for timelines, construction is projected to begin in early 2027, with an estimated completion period of 18 to 24 months after that. Traffic statistics indicate that Sunset Boulevard sees about 33,800 vehicles daily at its intersection with Corley Mill, while Corley Mill experiences approximately 14,200 vehicles at the same intersection.

Overall, this project represents a significant investment in Lexinton’s infrastructure intended to manage the increasing traffic demands produced by ongoing development and to improve accessibility for residents and commuters alike.
