Lexington School District 1 Set to Open New South Lake Elementary School

Lexington, S.C. — Lexington School District 1 is gearing up to welcome students to its newest facility, South Lake Elementary School, in just over six weeks. This new educational institution is part of a broader initiative following a successful $365 million bond referendum passed in 2018, which allocated $55.1 million for the construction of South Lake.

Facts About the New School

Scheduled to open its doors in early 2024, South Lake Elementary is designed to accommodate 850 students and will offer a comprehensive curriculum for children from 4K to 5th grade. Last summer, the district revised its attendance lines, resulting in some students from nearby schools such as Saxe Gotha and Carolina Springs transitioning to South Lake. Each section of the school has been thoughtfully constructed to address the specific needs of various grade levels, featuring lowered sinks, specialized classrooms, and dedicated playgrounds.

Focus on Innovative Learning

With over 28 years of educational experience, Principal Jennifer Stanley expressed her excitement about the school’s STEM classroom, which is aimed at promoting hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to explore innovative ideas through weekly sessions in this state-of-the-art facility. “We are dedicated to offering counseling services, special education, and various programs that allow children to thrive academically and socially,” she stated.

Caring Environment for Students

Stanley believes that fostering a nurturing environment is vital for student success. She refers to all students as “friends” to instill a sense of care and belonging among the staff and students. “It’s essential they know how much they are loved by the community,” she said. Stanley acknowledged the challenges faced during the school’s construction, including interviewing over 200 potential staff members to ensure that South Lake attracts only top-notch educators.

Addressing the Teacher Shortage

Amid an ongoing teacher shortage, Stanley is proactively working towards a solution. Her plan for the next three years includes forming partnerships with local universities and colleges to provide student teachers and practicum students observation opportunities at South Lake. “It’s crucial for us to find and cultivate great educators. If we fall short here, public education cannot fulfill its promise to the children we serve,” she said, emphasizing the importance of effective teaching in shaping future citizens.

A Bright Future Ahead

With the construction of South Lake Elementary nearing completion, the Lexington School District 1 community is looking forward to the positive impact the new facility will have on its students. The collaborative focus on student well-being, innovation, and community involvement reflects the district’s commitment to delivering a high-quality education. As the countdown to the opening continues, excitement is building within the community for the opportunities that lie ahead.
