LEXINGTON, S.C. — Trustees of Lexington County School District One are debating whether to pay themselves an allowance of $600 for each regular board meeting they attend, a change that could cost the district as much as $100,800 a year.
The draft policy would cap claims at up to 24 meetings a year, matching the two regular board meetings held each month. Committee sessions would not count, and neither would meetings that run less than 60 minutes. A trustee would have to be present and could not miss more than 15 minutes, and any member could turn the money down.
At the full cap, a single trustee could collect up to $14,400 a year. A candidate in the Nov. 3 board race spoke against the idea at the Oct. 20 meeting, arguing the money would do more good in classrooms.
The board took no vote that night. Board member Chris Rice noted that trustees cannot raise their own pay during a term, so any change would not take effect until after the 2028 or 2030 election.
The seven-member board governs a district based at 100 Tarrar Springs Road in Lexington. Its strategic plan aims for 95% of graduates to be college, career, or military ready by 2029.
