Cayce to Improve Dangerous Intersections After Approval of $160,000 D.O.T Grant

Cayce, S.C. – Several intersections in Cayce are home to dozens of collisions, pedestrian fatalities, and cycling accidents according to city officials and the South Carolina Department of Highway Patrol. Thanks to a $160,000 federal grant, the city of Cayce can begin the process of improving intersections. The Safer Streets Grant from SCDOT was approved by the council on April 17.

Identified Intersection Areas

The four intersections on the list are the 3000 block of Highway 321, Knox Abbott Drive and 12th Street, Frink Street and Julius Felder Street, and 12th Street and Frink Street. Cayce City Manager Tracy Hegler stated, “What we want to do with that is design the improvements and plans for the improvements at four particular spots in the city that we’ve identified as having some safety concerns.”

Solicitation for Consultation

Hegler further explained that the next step will involve soliciting a consultant to help with the design process. “That’s what the bulk of the money will go out to doing. This will be expert work,” said Hegler. The funds will cover the identification of issues and the creation of a safety improvement plan.

Community Response

People in the community, like Lisa Lee, expressed concerns about the unsafe conditions for pedestrians at these intersections. Lisa Lee noted, “No one is paying attention to the pedestrians most of the time, and that’s a sad case.” Residents are optimistic about the forthcoming safety plan designed to address these issues.
